Cepharanthine is a bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid isolated from Stephania cepharantha Hayata and Stephania epigaea H. S. Lo of the Menispermaceae family. It has effects such as anti-tumor, anti-malaria, antibacterial, and immunomodulatory functions. Modern research suggests that it also has the functions of stimulating the reticuloendothelial system, activating the hematopoietic tissue, and promoting the proliferation of bone marrow tissue. Clinically, it has been used to prevent and treat leukopenia in cancer patients caused by radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and other reasons, and certain effects have been achieved. Therefore, cepharanthine is considered a low-toxic and effective leukocyte-elevating drug. Cepharanthine can partially reverse the multidrug resistance of leukemia cells, and the effect is significantly better than that of the classic reversing drug verapamil. When at the reversing dose, the cytotoxic effect is much smaller than that of verapamil. Foreign studies also show that cepharanthine has a good reversing effect on a variety of drug-resistant cells. Cepharanthine can enhance the immunological function and activity of cells and macrophages in vivo. In Japan, cepharanthine has been used clinically as a leukocyte-elevating drug for many years with no obvious toxic and side effects. In China, it has been used clinically for the experimental treatment of pneumoconiosis for many years.
